Welcome to the Norman Mailer Mail-In Game Jam, a game jam about creating games using the themes Norman Mailer wrote around or details about his life. WHAT THE HECK IS THIS? I was on a train with a friend and work colleague when the topic of Norman Mailer came up. I didn't know much about Mailer, so I took a look through his Wikipedia article and lo and behold, what a character. Two most interesting parts to me were the description of Norman Mailer as the "chronicler of the American century" (a time that created and so heavily influenced our collective hobby of role-playing) the descriptions found in the "Reoccurring Themes" section of his page. JAM THEME Mailer wrote extensively about events and his feelings during the 20th century. A fair amount of his writing was controversial when it was written and remains controversial or sometimes more-so now with today's social attitudes. The goal of this jam isn't to demonize or glorify any specific opinion Mailer expressed but instead use some of those same themes to inspire us to create RPG material. Maybe we will mirror some of those evocative themes he wrote about and find something new. For example, just this first sentence from the wiki about Mailer’s violence and masculinity theme Mailer believed that violence, while brutal, was a path to existential authenticity and a rejection of societal repression. inspires tons of thoughts (at least in me!) relevant to role-playing. The themes described immediately jumped out to me as real…
